D.I.Y. All-Natural Mosquito/Insect Repellant Spray! (PLUS SOOTHING Bites SPRAY) !

Whether camping, walking/hiking/jogging etc. With all these beautiful places to visit this summer but with the thought of bug bites, and itchiness for days after… the thought isn’t super appealing is it. Let’s change that!

This one has natural Essential oils to help repel unwanted insects AND to soothe any bites if you missed a spot too! I love making 2-in-1 active products!

PRECAUTIONS: Do not use Pine Essential Oil in this recipe if you are using it on someone who is Pregnant or on infants and children under 5. (It may not be harmful, but it hasn’t been tested well enough, so it’s best to avoid it. The blend will still work wonders without this oil in the mix though.)

What are other handy common Essential Oils to repel insects? You may have some of these on hand. One thing to consider. Well two things, are to always review the precautions before you start making any blend of oils. If you are epileptic, pregnant, lactating, or putting these blends on infants or children some oils must be avoided.

Another fact to consider is how nice it smells. That sounds funny, right? But if it smells nice and… edible to you… One thing to consider here is it’s possible it may smell edible to others. It is recommended we stay away from edible-smelling oils if we are dousing our bodies and walking into the deep woods where wild animals are. Yikes hehe…

But if you’re a city slicker and there are bugs out and about, have fun and smell as tasty as you’d like to! lol

But my strong recommendation is to keep to woodsy scents if you are hiking, walking, or camping in the wilderness. I live where a grizzly bear walks our neighbourhood daily… Thus, I will be smelling ‘woodsy’ all summer long! haha

I stick to mostly woodsy with a hint of lavender as you see in the recipe below. But city slicker, I’d, by all means, take on the citrus/floral smells cause I LOVE those blends!

Here are some common household Essential Oils you may already have:

Citronella

Eucalyptus

Litsea Cubeba

Black Spruce

Fir

Geranium

Lavender

Manuka

Melissa

Peppermint

Rosemary

Spearmint

West Indian Bay

Cedar

Cinnamon

Clove

Frankincense

My Fav – Mosquito/Insect Repellant & Bite Soothing Recipe

Soothing & Repellant Mosquito Spray

Great Natural Camping and Outdoor Hiking Spray For The Family!
Prep Time10 mins
Total Time10 mins
Keyword: diy, natural, spray, mosquito, repellant, itch, bite, essential oils
Yield: 1 250 ml
Author: destressanddetox

Equipment

  • Spray Bottle (250ml size)
  • 1/2 tsp measuring spoon
  • Powdered Citric Acid
  • Pine Essential Oil
  • Black Spruce Essential Oil
  • Canadian Fir (Balsam) Essential Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil

Materials

  • 1/2 tsp citric acid
  • 9 drops Pine Essential Oil
  • 6 drops Black Spruce Essential Oil
  • 6 drops Canadian Fir (Balsam not Needle) Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 240 ml Purified or Distilled Water

Instructions

First

  • Put the citric acid in your spray bottle first.
  • Then add the Essential oils and shake the bottle to blend somewhat.
  • Add a bit of slightly warmed water first (about 1 Tbsp) then close the bottle and shake again.
  • Then top up the rest of the spray bottle with the rest with the room temperature water.

Notes

This is a lovely Woodsy Scent:
*Use warmed water to dissolve the citric acid and blend easier. Not hot as this could damage the essential oils and bottle (if you use a plastic bottle.)
I prefer to use Glass bottles, for an environmentally friendly container that you can reuse and reuse and REUSE, meaning it is also saving you money! 🙂

PRECAUTIONS: Do not use Pine Essential oil if pregnant or on infants or small children. You may remove this Essential Oil from the blend and this spray will absolutely still work wonders in helping avoid bites and soothing any bites after!
(I prefer the addition of Pine as it’s been said that bears do not like it and will likely stay away!) This is of course not 100% tested and there could be exceptions to the rule. But the theory is if you smell like food, you’ll probably taste like that food. So I do not want to smell like food to them! Lol, Rather a tree? Sure I’ll smell like a tree if that could deter bear interest, thanks!
One blog recommended dipping a rag in pine sol and putting on your hiking backpack.. I’d rather drop some Pine Essential oil on a rag so I don’t breathe in any chemicals myself.
